Welcome Message | ZeniMax Online Offices | Staff Profiles
Dan Dunham
Dan's first job in the game industry was doing freelance work on the Final Fantasy VII strategy guide at 17, though his first real development job was at Electronic Arts working on Knockout Kings. After a series of game development companies, he landed at Mythic Entertainment and became entrenched in MMOs. He was the Lead Programmer on Dark Age of Camelot and Lead Client Programmer on Warhammer Online. After a brief period working on Fallout 3, Dan helped start ZeniMax Online as Technical Director. When not programming, Dan helps lead a WoW raiding guild, is engrossed by television pop-culture, sucks at Rock Band, purchases console games and feels guilty about not playing them, crafts nicknames for his cats, and is struggling to learn to be a distance runner.
What's your best time in the 1/2 marathon?
When we started this company, I could run a very poor 5K. A year later I can run a poor half marathon. Someday I hope to run even longer distances even more poorly.
Do women with advanced math degrees intimidate you?
My wife has a PhD in Mathematics -- so yes, they do, but I try to harness that fear into something positive for humanity. From her viewpoint, I do simple "computation" math. From my viewpoint, she does "really complicated awesome things". She also runs far better than me, which I am also in awe of.
What got you started in MMOs?
I had never played an MMO before I started programming on DAoC. Mostly I avoided them out of fear of getting really into them -- which turned out to be true, as I found myself using 9 free accounts and playing an entire group of multiboxed Animists. I moved through many MMOs since then, but DAoC and WoW remain the two where I've spent the most time in the endgame.
What is your favorite game?
The game I remember most fondly is Starflight by Binary Systems. Granted I was young at the time, but I was utterly amazed at the depth and magnitude of the universe, which I still consider impressive 22 years later. I also never beat it (I will also blame this on being young).
